Do you have experience in and see the possibilities with Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR / AR)? Are you interested in working with questions related to user experience in visual 3D environments? Do you think mathematics, human behaviour and physics are fun, but you are more than happy to do programming? Do you want to go to the bottom with a difficult technical research question that is at the same time relevant for the industry? Then this is a PhD student position for you!

About the position
The PhD position will be carried out in close collaboration with the research group Realistic 3D at Mid Sweden University (www.miun.se/realistic3d). The research will be carried out at both sites, i.e. partly at RISE in Kista and partly at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, about half the time at each location.

It is worth noting that RISE, in its mission, has contributed and strengthened "innovation for sustainable growth", which aims to increase competitiveness, growth and entrepreneurship in Sweden by refining and transferring research results to viable products. Thus, innovative thinking in the person holding this doctoral position brings added value compared to doctoral students in more academic environments.

RISE has an open, non-hierarchical culture and believes in a balance between personal and professional life. RISE is a multicultural company and always strives to be an attractive employer for both women and men, regardless of cultural background.

The goal is that after 5 years of study (80%) in this doctoral project, at RISE and Mid Sweden University, you will act as an independent doctoral researcher working with interdisciplinary and innovative methods to contribute and strengthen Swedish society.

The doctoral dissertation will be interdisciplinary, and research based at the forefront of both the "User and Quality of Experience" area and a new discipline in immersive visual communication called "Augmented Telepresence". The latter integrates technical challenges in the areas of Telepresence and Augmented Reality, specifically in the context of industrial remote control, with quality evaluations of such systems. Thus, the successful candidate must be highly motivated and to deepen himself/herself in both technical and evaluation disciplines. In addition, it is important to be motivated to do both scientific research and industry-oriented innovations.

Your knowledge
You are eligible to apply if you have a degree at the advanced level or have passed at least 240 ECTS[1], of which at least 60 ECTS at the advanced level. In addition, the applicant must have at least 90 ECTS in the relevant research topic or equivalent knowledge.

Good knowledge of spoken and written English is a requirement. Examples of a suitable academic background are a Master of Science or master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or applied physics. It can also be a closely related subject such as user experience or human-machine interaction. There is a special emphasis on strong mathematical background and documented experience in virtual reality, video, augmented reality and/or quality evaluation.

In addition to formal qualifications, selection is also based on other work (e.g. diploma work project), and selected courses at the advanced level, as well as interview and possibly an assignment.

You as a person
In addition to good subject knowledge, great emphasis is placed on creative thinking, motivation, collaborative ability, being able to work independently and taking initiative. In this role we see that you have an outgoing person who genuinely likes to work together with others towards high goals. You are well organized and have a drive to get to the bottom of your research assignment in an independent and scientific way.
