About the position
The doctoral student position is one of about ten doctoral positions that are now being established within the framework of a newly started center of excellence for solar electricity SOLVE. The center is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, RISE, five universities, as well as about 50 companies and public organizations.
Over the past ten years, electricity from solar cells has gone from being a marginal phenomenon to being one of the dominant technologies for energy conversion globally in terms of expansion rate and production cost. In several European countries, it is already the most cost-effective way to produce electricity, which also offers a number of other benefits. The environmental impact can be small and continuously decreases as renewable electricity production expands. The solar cell technology is modular and can be built in the entire scale, from a residential roof to parks of hundreds of hectares, and can also be expanded quickly and easily if the needs increase.
The doctoral project aims to explore the conditions for a careful and sustainable expansion of solar production in buildings by taking advantage of the opportunities to integrate solar cells into architecture. At present, integration often means increased costs, which leads to a simpler and less integrated installation or no installation at all. There is thus a certain opposition between economic and aesthetic values, which can be solved, among other things, through new technical achievements and more efficient construction and installation processes. The doctoral student work will be based on an ongoing international research collaboration where six different countries, including Sweden, carry out so-called technological innovation system analyses of building-integrated solar in their respective countries. Since the analyses provide a multifaceted picture of the market's challenges, the doctoral student will have some freedom to choose a specialization that suits the doctoral student's background. The results will have a good potential to support new innovations and the market for well-integrated solar cells in the future.
The doctoral student will be employed as an industrial doctoral student at RISE and, after admission, enrolled in the doctoral program in innovation science at Halmstad University at one of Sweden's leading university environments in innovation science. Applicants will therefore be assessed based on their ability to meet the requirements for a doctoral degree (PhD) in innovation science.
Location: Gothenburg, Stockholm or Borås but other locations can be discussed. Some course and project work will take place on-site at Halmstad University.
Tasks
The doctoral program involves, in addition to participation in the doctoral program's courses and other activities, the implementation of an independent dissertation, which in total means 4 years of full-time work. However, the time can be extended for another year by other tasks.
Eligibility requirements
The applicant must have completed a degree at an advanced level in an area relevant to innovation science and met course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
Who are you?
We are looking for a person interested in contributing to a sustainable society and has a degree at an advanced level in e.g. Construction, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Energy Systems or Industrial Economics.
You are familiar with and have an interest in social science perspectives on technology and qualitative studies. You are driven and independent at the same time as you have a good ability and willingness to collaborate with other researchers outside your own discipline, as well as with societal actors in other areas to develop interdisciplinarity. You must have good communication skills and be able to express yourself well in speech and writing in English.
We offer a varied and expansive environment, where there is a lot of room for our own initiatives and development, at the same time as we focus on cooperation and the team. You will be part of a unit with a strong team spirit and creativity. The employment is a doctoral student employment, limited in time to 5 years, but with a great opportunity to be transformed into a permanent employment.
