Do you have a passion for fiber optics, photonics and sensor technologies? Do you have academic or industry experience and a solid competence in fiber optic sensor technology development? Do you want to work with innovative solutions and hardware that will benefit industry and society? Are you a team player and skilled at establishing and nurturing customer relations? If you are a good listener, can think strategically and act operationally by identifying customers’ needs and contributing with new insights to solve them, then you might be the person we are looking for!

About us
To work at RISE’s Fiber Optics, Photonics and Twin Transition unit means to get the opportunity to address industrial and societal challenges through the development of innovative fiber optic sensor solutions. Thanks to the broad applicability of fiber optic sensor systems, we work across several different business and innovation areas. Examples of application areas we are working within are, process industry, power electronics, energy and medtech. Our main activities are in applied public-private funded research in cooperation with Swedish and international industry and academia.

The main areas of research are distributed fiber sensing (DAS, Raman etc) and quasi-distributed fiber optic sensors and their industrial applications. We also have research activities within optofluidic where specialty fibers with holes are used for sensors in e.g. medtech. We work close to our sister unit Fiberlab in Hudiksvall, that develops and manufactures specialty optical fibers and cabling. Examples are fibers with holes, microstructures, ultra-thin fibers, and fibers with specialty coatings. The combination of our two units means that we can develop tailor-made fiber-optic sensor solutions in an almost unique way for the benefit of both industrial and research-oriented projects.

About the role
We are looking for a researcher who will work with the research and development of advanced fiber optic sensor system solutions. Depending on your experience and level of seniority, your main tasks will range practical lab development (e.g. developing distributed sensing systems), leading and participating in field trials to initiating and leading research and innovation projects, both publicly financed and direct customer assignments. Typically, you will work closely with other sensor researchers in the unit but also together with other experts within, e.g, signal processing and application experts.

The emphasis of the projects we have are of an applied nature where some form of prototype or hardware that is developed at the end of the project is installed and evaluated at the industry. We also have more research-related projects where the technology has a significant research level with lower TRL where basic technologies are developed and where publications and collaborations with national and international research actors are central. You will be expected to create new collaborations and business opportunities with companies. You are expected to leverage and extend your broad network within RISE and externally with the industry and academia. You will also carry out practical development work in the lab and on the field.

Who are you?
You have a PhD, or equivalent expertise, in a relevant field and at least a few years of work experience in R&D. You have extensive experience within one or more fields directly relevant to the unit’s main activities: distributed fiber optic sensing, FBGs, photonics and industrial implementation. You have a strong practical experience working with fiber optics and a solid theoretical background. Skills in software such as Labview or Matlab in measurement applications are a merit.

You are customer-oriented and skilled at turning customer needs into value through innovations. You preferably have experience in project management and in writing funding applications. You enjoy working in dynamic teams, where the members are multidisciplinary and can divide your time between short-term and long-term projects. You are well organized, self-motivated and can work independently as well as in part of a team. You have excellent communication and presentation skills. Well written and spoken English is required. Fluency in Swedish is considered a merit.

Are we right for each other?
We cannot promise you an easy task, but we can promise you dedicated colleagues and some truly engaging societal challenges to tackle. You will get to work in a dynamic environment offering professional and personal development opportunities. At RISE, we want you to succeed and feel good, because together with your colleagues you contribute to a sustainable future and to securing a leading position for our industry and research globally. RISE can give you the chance to make a real difference. Welcome to one of Europe’s leading research institutes and innovation partner.

We look forward to your application!
