The Networked Embedded Systems (NES) group at RISE is a part of the Computer Systems Laboratory. The current research focus is on the Internet of Things. Among the group's key technologies are the Contiki operating system, uIP stack, ContikiRPL, SICSLoWPAN, and lightweight implementation of IPsec and DTLS. The NES group conduct projects together with industry and academic partners from Sweden and across the world.

Thesis Description
The resource-constrained devices of the battery-less Internet of Things are powered off energy harvesting and compute intermittently, as energy is available. Forward progress of programs is ensured by creating persistent state, for example, by performing periodic checkpoints on non-volatile memory. This computing pattern drastically departs from that of mainstream platforms and creates new security challenges. Focus of the thesis is to systematically analyze the many security issues arising in these emerging platforms and to explore preliminary solutions to address them. We foresee the latter to be using software-only solutions as well as dedicated hardware support, for example, using ARM TrustZone.

Competence
Passion for technology, inner drive, and basic knowledge of C programming and security in embedded systems are the only prerequisites.
