The future requires safer and more economic and environmentally sustainable transports. Division Safety and Transport has experts in active safety, mechanical risks, measurement technology and fire safety in advanced lab environments.

Background and purpose
This master thesis is offered at RISE Measurement Technology within the scope of the research project VAMLAV, which aims to create open and validated HD-maps of the Rural Road track at Astazero for automated and connected vehicles.

RISE Measurement Technology in Borås has an interest in learning more about stability evaluation of references used for connected and automated vehicles. The references vary from road signs to road markings and are often positioned with Lidars and RTK-GNSS. They can also be custom-made references with unevaluated stability. No matter which positioning method is used the positioning uncertainty of the reference is often dominated by the stability of the object and how the reference objects position is being used. For example: The measured position of the concrete base of a road sign is not valid for the centre of the sign. To use the base position in this way, tilt and other factors need to be corrected for and be included in the measurement uncertainty of the position.

About the project
The master thesis project focuses on evaluating positioning uncertainty of different reference objects. Some objects are part of existing road infrastructure and are possibly suitable for use as references. The stability of these objects needs to be evaluated from a literature study and/or experimental data. An analysis needs to be made on which objects are most suitable for use as references.

Additionally, VAMLAV is constructing several objects for use as custom-made reference objects, both short-term objects with low stability and long-term objects with potentially high stability. The stability of the short-term objects can be evaluated with experimental data and a measurement uncertainty analysis.  While the long-term objects will be monitored with GNSS daily and laser scanners seasonally. These measurements can then be used together with weather data to evaluate the stability of the long-term objects.

The scope of the project is suitable for 1-2 students.

The problems that need to be considered are:

  • What is the typical stability of objects in existing infrastructure?
  • How does this impact the objects positioning uncertainty?
  • Can the reference objects be divided in categories for different use cases with different positioning requirements?
  • How much does seasonal effects such as the frost/thaw cycle and object settling in the ground contribute to the uncertainty?
  • Does weather and wind contribute to instability of some objects?
