Are you interested in finding solutions to the increasing problem with antibiotic resistance and want to learn techniques to formulate different classes of antimicrobials? Would you like to work in an innovative-driven environment with experts in formulations for pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics and cleaning? We are now seeking a Master student with an interest in drug formulation to explore topical formulations of various classes of antibiotics.

Background
The increasing spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria are threatening our health care system, and common infections are getting harder to treat with currently available antibiotics. It is a race against time to try to develop new antibiotics and innovative formulations to increase the efficiency of existing antibiotics. One area of interest is wound care, where the development of innovative topical formulations (gel, creams) of antimicrobial substances (antibiotics or antimicrobial peptides) could improve the treatment of multi-resistant wound infections.

Goal
The goal of the project is to systematically evaluate topical formulations of different classes of antimicrobial substances. The work will include solubility predictions and experimental work of antimicrobials (peptide, soluble and insoluble antibiotics) in mixtures of approved excipients used in topical formulations. The laboratory formulation work will use a Design of experiment approach (DoE, MODDE) to develop new topical prototype formulations suitable for the different antimicrobials. The work will also include characterization and analysis of the formulations (for example: IR, UV-Vis, mass-spectroscopy, NMR), together with a short stability study.

Who are you?
For this diploma work, the student should be enrolled in a master program in pharmacy, biotechnology/chemical engineering or similar, and have background knowledge on drug formulation.
