Background
Master thesis work that is part of an ongoing research project focusing on exploring and developing multiscale FE models and inventing methods producing novel experimental data for model validation, i.e., temperature history measurements and synchrotron tests used to map residual stresses.
Two master thesis projects will be run in parallel, evaluating the experimental data and exploring the influence of different model assumptions on a mesoscale level to the predicted temperature and stress build-up in an AM component on a macroscale level (multiscale modelling approach).
Thesis Project Description
This thesis project will focus on calibrating the Goldak double-ellipsoidal heat source model and explore the response from different sets of model assumptions for an FE model on the mesoscale level. This means that experimental observations from temperature measurements and microscopic evaluations from Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam (PBF-LB) tests in which an individual or a limited number of weld passes are produced will be utilized. The target is to determine local inherent strain values that can be applied in a macroscale FE-model developed in a Master thesis running in parallel. The PBF-LB tests are planned to be performed at Nikon SLM Solutions in Germany. Synchrotron measurements performed at the Petra III facility in Hamburg, Germany, will be used to map the residual stress state, available for validation purposes.
