The PhD student will be hosted by RISE Computer Science, Stockholm, Sweden and will be enrolled in Uppsala University or KTH.

RISE - Research Institutes of Sweden is the largest public-sector research institute in Sweden with over 2300 employees, ~30% PhDs. RISE has an annual turnover of ~2.5 Billion SEK. Furthermore, RISE is owner and partner in 60% of all Sweden’s test and demonstration facilities. In international collaboration with companies, academia and the public sector, RISE contributes to a competitive business community and a sustainable society. RISE is an independent state-owned research institute offering unique expertise for future-proof technologies, products and services.

The Computer Science department of RISE, is at the forefront of ICT research and development. RISE Computer Science performs applied ICT research, knowledge creation and innovation through the deployment of new services and products. Results are disseminated through our partnership or through test beds and demonstrators. The department’s collective expertise includes cybersecurity, machine learning, sensors and actuators, communication networks and data analytics to visualization, interaction design and service development.

The student will be placed in the Connected Intelligence unit that is focused on IoT, networking and edge AI. Our core areas of expertise includes 5G/6G networking, low power wireless IoT, AI/ML for networks and edge AI. The unit publishes in top venues in their research areas and produces open source software that is used all around the world both in industry and academia. The unit includes four professors from Uppsala University and KTH. It has successfully led many EU and large Swedish projects.

The student will be enrolled at one of the leading universities in Sweden (Uppsala University or KTH).

Project Description
While 5G deployment just started, there are already initial attempts at defining what 6G networks could be. We are already witnessing a growth in network complexity which is making it hard to find the optimal operation point of current and especially future mobile networks. At the same time different services and applications are required to coexist over the same network which means that multiple goals, often incompatible with each other, must be satisfied. Finally we are witnessing an explosion in the number of optimization parameters, i.e., the knobs of the network. In this context, AI/ML can play a key role in converging connectivity and computing: better automation, increased performance, and decreased time-to-market of new features. This Ph.D. topic will focus on distributed and decentralized AI/ML solutions for future 6G systems with a particular focus on Edge native AI. The main focus of the Ph.D. student will be on an evolvable smart network, i.e. a network that can constantly evolve and goes beyond the current concept of "generation". If you are the type of researcher who likes turning ideas into reality this is your chance to have an impact in shaping 6G networks.

Requirements
The candidate must have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in computer science or related areas relevant to the PhD project topics. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in implementing his/her theoretical ideas in the field of AI/ML for network optimization into practically working prototypes using popular frameworks and platforms (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.). Substantial knowledge on networking technologies with a particular focus on cellular communication, Wi-Fi, and low-power IoT will be considered a plus. Evidence of knowledge in mathematics subjects, good programming skills, good communication skills, good command of both spoken and written English, are required.

Appointment period
The position is for four years but may be extended by department duties (at most 20%). The PhD education also includes participation in relevant courses.

Working in Sweden
Sweden is a fantastic place for living and working. Swedes are friendly and speak excellent English. The quality of life is high, with a strong emphasis on outdoor activities. The Swedish working climate emphasizes an open atmosphere, with active discussions involving both junior and senior staff. All PhD students and Postdocs are full employees, with standard salaries and five weeks of paid holiday. The starting salary of a PhD student is currently 30000 SEK/month (around 3000Euro/month). Spouses of employees are entitled to work permits, and, after being awarded a PhD degree, non-EU-citizens are eligible for permanent work permits. Healthcare is free after a small co-pay and RISE provides additional occupational health services and subsidizes athletic costs, such as a gym membership. The parental benefits in Sweden are among the best in the world, including extensive parental leave (for both parents), paid time off to care for sick children, and affordable daycare.

Welcome with your application!
The application should include a description of yourself, your research interests, reasons for applying for this particular PhD position and past experience (max. 3 pages), a CV, copies of relevant university degrees and transcripts, relevant publications, a copy of your MSc thesis and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to include up to three reference letters or contact information to up to 3 reference persons. We would also like to know your earliest possible date for starting.
