Are you a recent graduate MSc in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Fiber Technology, Materials Science or similar and want to continue in the research area "resource-smart processes for bio-based materials"? Are you curious about and want to contribute to the entire value chain from wood-based raw materials to industrial upscaling of bio-based low-density materials? Do you want to participate in an exciting project where academia, research institutes and industry collaborate? Then you might be the doctoral student we are looking for!

About us
Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and MoRe Research collaborate with industry in a new research project; "Resource-smart processes" funded by BioInnovation (www.resurssmarta.se). The employment takes place at MoRe Research, Örnsköldsvik (part of RISE) but the position has a double connection where the employee will be positioned at LTU in Luleå for the first two years and the subsequent two in the research group at MoRe Research in Örnsköldsvik. The research group Biochemical Process Engineering at Luleå University of Technology consists of 20+ people who work with pre-treatment of biomass, design and use of enzymes and microorganisms for the production of fuels, chemicals and materials. Our expertise ranges from molecular biology, industrial biotechnology, enzyme technology, protein chemistry, process technology to modeling of bioprocesses.

MoRe Research is a subsidiary (approximately 50 employees) of RISE AB and works with forest industry research and development. One group focuses on material development, including composite materials, low-density materials and hot-pressed materials. Our focus is application-based research with forest raw materials as a starting point, and our expertise lies in materials such as fiber and cellulose chemistry and its interactions as well as process technology with applications from lab scale to pilot scale.

Project focus
The purpose of the research project is to process and chemically modify outgoing carbohydrate fractions from the ”organosolv” process. These modified carbohydrates will then be used as constituent components of a bio-based low-density material. By having control over the process parameters from fraction to finished application, an interesting opportunity is given to set the properties of the constituent components in a way that results in a material that exhibits the desired mechanical strength and wet stability.

Terms of employment
Employment as a doctoral student at MoRe Research. The work will be carried out in equal parts at Luleå University of Technology (2 years) and at MoRe Research in Örnsköldsvik (2 years) with supervision from each party. The assignment is limited in time to cover a total of 4 years of full-time work. Desired start date: 20211201.

The position as a doctoral student
In the current position as a doctoral student, you will carry out experimental research that is combined with analysis work, work with scientific publications, and doctoral student courses.
